Unlike other southern beaches, the area has retained its lush rural characteristics. The flat broad stretch of sand, one of the best beaches in the country and the calm, shallow sea that is safe for swimming throughout the year are its biggest attractions. Popular activities such as whale watching, turtle hatcheries and bird sanctuaries are within easy reach.
Hikkaduwa has long been a must-visit visitor destination on account of the excellent diving opportunities afforded by its famous marine national park and its gorgeous stretch of golden sand. In addition, the beaches of Wewela and Narigama just out of town offer breaks good enough to attract experienced and novice surfers.
Bentota just 65 km south of Colombo has been a popular holiday destination for many years on account of its location by the Indian Ocean, a major river and a lagoon. This provides access to a broad, flat stretch of golden sand and a water body ideal for a range of water sports for much of the year. As the town has an excellent collection of hotels and resorts spa treatments and gourmet dining experiences are part of its attraction.
