Five Must Visit Spots In Sri Lanka

Although Sri Lanka offers a series of wonderful holiday destinations there are some vacation spots better at providing experiences to remember.

For anyone arriving in Sri Lanka, it is usual to spend a few days in Colombo, the country’s largest city and its commercial hub. While a modern city it also has a history going back five hundred years thereby providing a combination of historic attractions, traditional festivals, cultural activities, and a range of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences. Colombo’s modern transport network of road and rail makes getting around the city and suburbs easy. It is also well connected to the rest of the country.

Those contemplating visiting destinations along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, missing Galle is not an option. Not only is it the home of a 300-year-old fortified city, a UNESCO heritage site, but provides a central location from which to visit other exciting southern destinations. Unlike other antiquities, Galle fort is still very much a part of the lives of the people there and provides a range of exceptional places to stay, shop and eat. Unawatuna a popular resort area is just a few minutes bus ride from the city center. Galle is easily accessible on the A2 and from the Southern Expressway and serves as a transport hub for the region.

For those who want to get away from it all Mawella, a small seaside town offers secluded properties to enjoy sun, sea and sand without the crowds. Unlike other southern beaches, the area has retained its lush rural characteristics. The flat broad stretch of sand, one of the best beaches in the country and the calm, shallow sea that is safe for swimming throughout the year are its biggest attractions. Popular activities such as whale watching, turtle hatcheries and bird sanctuaries are within easy reach.

Hikkaduwa has long been a must-visit visitor destination on account of the excellent diving opportunities afforded by its famous marine national park and its gorgeous stretch of golden sand. In addition, the beaches of Wewela and Narigama just out of town offer breaks good enough to attract experienced and novice surfers.

Bentota just 65 km south of Colombo has been a popular holiday destination for many years on account of its location by the Indian Ocean, a major river and a lagoon. This provides access to a broad, flat stretch of golden sand and a water body ideal for a range of water sports for much of the year. As the town has an excellent collection of hotels and resorts spa treatments and gourmet dining experiences are part of its attraction.

Staying in luxury holiday Villas and boutique hotels in Sri Lanka is the best way to enjoy the tranquillity of exceptional locations and the many attractions along the country’s southern coast.
